I used to use Font Reserve, that is, until Extensis bought it, then it just went buggy and never worked and then was completely incompatible with Tiger.
Then I went to Suitcase, which I always hated and avoided like I avoid lepers, but it was the only COMMERCIAL option left which I knew of that had a font server. IT was buggy as a mother-fudger and crashed quite often, more often than FREE applications did which handled more info and tasks than Suitcase, which I found to be absolutely ridiculous that we spend our hard-earned money on this and it doesn't even work efficiently.
Then I went to Fusion, hoping in my deepest of hopes that Extensis FINALLY got it's act together and alas... NADA! All heII broke loose, crashes, kernel panics, locking, extended time in starting up and opening applications, having to consistently remove the font database and reinstall everything and set up all my directories, etc...
Fusion completely neglected to start up at all, which at the time I thought I was up shiz creek without a paddle as I was in the midst of a project with a tight deadline for some big money, I thought I was going to lose my azz on this project becaues it would be late and I'd have to completely eat the entire cost... I was freaking out and I spent the next 4-6 hours trying to resolve the issue, re-installing fusion, re-installing my System Folder and EVERYTHING I could fond, to no avail, it still locked every time on start-up...
Finally I had enough of Extensis... So I decided to wipe my system completely clean of Extensis applications and try this nifty little application called Linotype Font Explorer, found here: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX
VOILA! The 4-6 hours total I spent turned out to be the biggest productivity saver I ever had, actually ridding myself of that stupid Suitcase application and re-installing all my font directories one more time actually SAVED me time in the long-run. Everything worked like an absolute CHARM! The transition was ABSOLUTELY SEAMLESS and quick! You can do all the things that you can in those application that you shell out your hard-earned money for and yet you can do even MORE!
AND THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE DEAL IS THAT LINOTYPE FONT EXPLORER ACTUALLY WORKS, AND IT WORKS QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Need I say that I will ABSOLUTELY NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER spend another dime with Extensis for ANY application that they make. ABSOLUTELY NEVER! I actually would like my money back from Extensis for causing me all the headaches that it did, causing me to be late on projects and losing money because of stupid little font issues that should never have occurred and for all of the, what SHOULD have been billable time to clients that I spent having to troubleshoot their GARBAGE Suitcase applications. In-fact, I just may sue them for promising a functioning piece of software and then delivering a piece of software that is sucking the life out it's customers productivity.
Linotype Font Explorer is the BOMB! Not only does it have all the capabilities of Suitcase and Fusion (aside from the server) it is very nice looking and QUICK! I have absolutely NO hang-ups when using it.
I would definitely recommend and pay a good sum of cash for this application in a heartbeat!
I certainly hope that Linotype, someday soon, makes a server option and starts to charge a fee for it's applications, I WILL UNDOUBTEDLY WITHOUT A QUESTION pay for them if they do.
I recommend that ANYBODY with any sort of font headaches caused by "those" Extensis products or any other font mgmt. application install and use Linotype Font Explorer. You ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT be disappointed, I promise!
Just to note: My systems are all COMPLETELY CLEAN and stable, I don't put useless 3rd party apps that could or would cause any of this kind of nonsense to happen on them, so there's absolutely no underlying reason why Extensis apps should be the ONLY ones which don't work other than the fact that their applications are ABSOLUTE GARBAGE! I'm going to promote this application all I can!
