Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month. Need a reminder? 1. Avoid constant charge-discharge. If your laptop is at 90%, don't plug it in. Run it down to 50%, then plug it in. And leave it plugged in several hours. If you're constantly discharging only 10-20% and then recharging the battery, you're going to run the capacity down faster. This also happens to iPod batteries. I run my battery down to 20-30% during the day, then charge all evening when I'm at home working on the computer.
2. Don't over-calibrate. Some people recommend calibrating your battery once a month. That's not good advice. It puts too much wear on the battery. Once every six months is the most often you should be doing that (I calibrated by iBook's battery only once, and each of my MBP's batteries only once).
3. Buy a second battery. Even if you only need one, buy a second one anyway and swap them once a week. This will reduce the wear on both and keep them both functioning longer. When you swap the batteries, make sure that before you plug your computer in again, you half-cycle the battery that just went in (after a week of sitting, it should be around 97% charge... run it to less than 50 and then plug it in).
